Big Ten Champion Ohio State Wrestling Coach Tom Ryan to Host Clinic at Yeti MMA on May 20

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Yeti MMA (2507 Rte. 22 West in Scotch Plains) welcomes Big Ten Champion Ohio State wrestling coach Tom Ryan to host a clinic at the facility's Yale Street Wrestling Club on May 20.

“Coach Ryan will be bringing us the finest and newest techniques that he also teaches in the OSU wrestling room," says Yale Street Wrestling Club founder Donnie DeFilippis, a renowned local wrestling coach. "He'll review basic techniques that newer wrestlers need to learn, and these are the same skills that advanced athletes must continually practice. I've known Tom a long time, dating back to when he was the coach at Hofstra.

Ryan has led the Ohio State wrestling program to unprecedented heights, culminating in 2015 with the program's first ­ever national championship. Ryan concluded his 10th season in Columbus last March. During the season, he guided the Buckeyes to the Big Ten championship and saw Myles Martin (174 lbs.) and Kyle Snyder (285 lbs.) win NCAA titles. The Buckeyes made their fourth Top­ Three finish at the NCAA Championships in the last 10 years.

Named 2017 Big Ten Coach of the Year and the 2015 NCAA Coach of the Year, Ryan has helped six different student­-athletes win national championships:

  • Logan Stieber (141 lbs.), a four-­time champion,
  • J Jaggers (141 lbs.), a two-time champion in 2008 and 2009,
  • Mike Pucillo, the 184 lb. champion in 2008,
  • Nathan Tomasello the 125 lb. champion in 2015,
  • Kyle Snyder (285 lbs.) and Myles Martin (174 lbs.) in 2016

Prior to coaching at Ohio State, Ryan was the head coach at Hofstra from 1995­ to 2006. While there, he earned Eastern Collegiate Wrestling Association and Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors seven times. He also was named New York State Coach of the Year twice. Leading Hofstra to six consecutive conference titles, Ryan's team recorded a 47­-match conference unbeaten streak. Ryan earned his bachelor's degree in education from Iowa in 1993.
