Nearly 200 Boy Scouts, Explorers and adult leaders attending the 2017 National Jamboree in July will be wearing one of 7 uniform shoulder patches that honor battleships with a connection to the State of New Jersey.

National Jamborees are held once every 4 years by the Boy Scouts of America, and most local councils, including New Jersey’s Patriots’ Path Council, create a set of commemorative patches specifically for those events, for Scouts to wear on their uniforms, and to trade with each other during and after the event.

Some of the ships being honored in Patriots’ Path Council’s commemorative set of patches include three World War II-era vessels, including the battleship USS New Jersey; aircraft carrier USS Princeton; and landing craft USS Raritan. The set also includes modern-day ships, such as the recently launched expeditionary transport USNS Trenton.

According to Jamboree Chairman Marty Foy, “The decision to honor our nation’s naval battleships was made by the Scouts who are registered to attend the Jamboree. Naval ships were proposed as a theme of our patch set, along with a few other ideas, and it was the Scouts' top choice. The patch set’s connection with New Jersey is intended to recognize the men and women from our home state who have served, or currently serve in the US Navy and other armed services.”

More than 25,000 scouts from around the nation are expected to attend this 10-day, high-adventure extravaganza at the Boy Scouts of America's Summit National Scout Reserve, located on 10,600 acres in West Virginia. This year's Jamboree will run from July 18 - 28.

Each participating Scout from Patriot’s Path Council will receive two full patch sets as part of their registration for the event. The Council’s patch sets, as well as other Jamboree-related items, will be available for purchase by other individuals at a later date, to be announced. For information on how to become a Scout, please visit the Patriots' Path Council website.

Capitalist or Communist?

Karl Marx may have been the pioneer, but many other Jews were also involved in the struggle for communism, particularly in the early days of the Russian revolution.
