RAHWAY, NJ -- Union Catholic wasn't going to let it happen again.

After a tough loss on penalty kicks to Rahway in the first round of the Union County Tournament last Saturday when UC had a 2-0 lead, the Vikings avenged that defeat on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Rahway at Rahway River Park.

Union Catholic took a 2-0 lead, just likes in Saturday’s game, when sophomore Liam Bennett scored in the first half and senior Kevin Degnan found the back of the net in the second half. But this time the Vikings clamped down and didn’t allow Rahway, which scored with five seconds left, back into the game.

Bennett’s goal was the first varsity goal of his career, while Degnan tallied his team-leading eighth goal. Degnan also assisted on Bennett’s goal and Kyle Bartley got an assist on Degnan’s goal. Sophomore Conor Reilly played great in goalie for UC as he came up with nine saves.

The Vikings, now 5-3-1 on the season, will be back in action at home on Thursday vs. Hillside at 4 p.m. is Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s only free daily paper. Sign up for our daily eNews and follow us on Facebook and twitter @SPF_TAP. Download the free TAPinto App for iPhone or Android.

The Missing Moses

A seemingly dubious distinction belongs to this week’s Parshah, Tetzaveh (Exodus 27:20–30:10). It is the only reading in the Torah — from the first Parshah of the book of Exodus (in which he is born) until the end of the book of Numbers — where the name of Moses is not mentioned. Tetzaveh’s opening words are V’atah ...
