NEWARK, NJ -- Calandra’s Bakery has always served up impressive desserts and many different types of delicious bread to its customers. But if not for its never-say-die attitude type of owner, Calandra’s would have never been able to spread its treats throughout New Jersey.

In 1962, Luciano Calandra, an immigrant from Italy, opened Calandra’s Bakery in Newark with his wife Ortenza. People began to flock to their location for one reason: great bread. Calandra’s has since added  two other locations (Fairfield, CT & Caldwell, NJ) in addition to the Newark original. Together, the three bakeries sell their products sold in more than 500 supermarkets, delis, restaurants and, locally at Rocko's Ice Cream.

"We make cannolis fresh daily with cream made by Calandra's. We are selling lots of those. People have also placed dessert pre orders for their parties and get togethers," said Brandon Watterson, manager of Rocko's Ice Cream (38 South Martine Ave., Fanwood).

Rocko's offers Calandra’s entire delicious treats menu, including custom-made birthday cakes with fresh fruit filling, cannolis, fruit tarts, and pastries such as Napoleon's, brownies, and tiramisu. Cupcake fans can choose cappuccino, red velvet, vanilla, and chocolate, amongst others.

“Some have ordered dozens of items in advance. We receive our orders every morning and keep them fresh until the customer pickup" said Watterson. All we need is 24-48 hours notice and we will have your Calandra's desserts ready for you at Rocko's when you need them” said Watterson.
