FANWOOD, NJ – Police are investigating the cause of a car accident that took out a front door and window and caused severe damage to Mara’s Café & Bakery (250 South Ave.) in downtown Fanwood shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday. A black SUV slammed into a tree just outside the eatery near the corner of South and Martine Avenues.

“We’re very fortunate that no one was injured since the accident happened at a time when we were closed,” said Marci Semel, owner of Mara’s Café & Bakery, who worked frantically to open Monday morning for Martin Luther King Day-related events today. “We’re thankful to be open; with the holiday and related events, today will be our busiest day of the month.”

Among the activities at Mara's on Monday, Kaavya Krishna-Kumar collected drawings for her Girl Scout Gold Award project, which will beautify the borough with mosaic planters decorated with scenes of Fanwood.

TAP into Scotch Plains-Fanwood will report on more details as the investigation are made public.
