FANWOOD, NJ -- National Waffle Day is marked every year in the U.S. on August 24, the date that Cornelius Swarthout received a patent on his waffle iron in 1869. 

In celebration, The Fanwood Grille (34 South Martine Ave.) will offer free toppings on any waffle ordered on Thursday, Aug. 24. 

"We are always looking to do something fun with food at the Fanwood Grille," said owner John Mooney. "What could be more fun than celebrating National Waffle Day on August 24?"

Down the block, Rocko's Ice Cream (38 South Martine Ave.) will offer giant waffle cones for $3 in celebration of National Waffle Day. 

Fun Facts About Waffles

  • The word “waffle” is from the Dutch, meaning “wafer.” The treats date back to the Middle Ages when the light, thin cakes called "wafers."
  • In the late 1700’s, Thomas Jefferson returned from France with a waffle iron that was reportedly the first one in America.
  • National Waffle Day is August 24, the anniversary of a U.S. patent for a waffle maker being issued to Cornelius Swartwout of Troy, NY, in 1869.
  • Eggo Waffles were introduced in supermarket freezer sections in 1953.
  • Maurice Vermersch sold his wife’s Brussels Waffles at the 1964 World’s Fair in Queens, New York. Thinking that Americans wouldn't know where Brussels was, he dubbed them “Belgian Waffles.”
