Fun Facts About Waffles

  • The word “waffle” is from the Dutch, meaning “wafer.” The treats date back to the Middle Ages when the light, thin cakes called "wafers."
  • In the late 1700’s, Thomas Jefferson returned from France with a waffle iron that was reportedly the first one in America.
  • National Waffle Day is August 24, the anniversary of a U.S. patent for a waffle maker being issued to Cornelius Swartwout of Troy, NY, in 1869.
  • Eggo Waffles were introduced in supermarket freezer sections in 1953.
  • Maurice Vermersch sold his wife’s Brussels Waffles at the 1964 World’s Fair in Queens, New York. Thinking that Americans wouldn't know where Brussels was, he dubbed them “Belgian Waffles.”
  • In 2007, Thomas DeGeest, a native of Belgium and a former IBM consultant, launched the iconic Wafels & Dinges food truck in New York City. His wafel empire now includes kiosks in parks throughout Manhattan, a stand-alone store on the Lower East Side, and a location at the Kennywood Amusement Park outside Pittsburgh.
