CLARK, NJ – Joseph Carreiro, 65, of Clark has been arrested for allegedly attempting to promote obscene materials and debauch the morals of a 14-year-old girl for the purpose of a sexual encounter according to a release from the South Plainfield Police.

According to officials, a SP detective posed as a 14-year-old girl when answering an ad online posted by Carreiro soliciting sex. Conversations between the two took place through email over a few days.  

The detective alleges that Carreiro, believing he was emailing a 14-year-old, girl, had sexually explicit conversations that lead to attempting to set up a meeting.

South Plainfield Police later arrested Carreiro at his home in Clark and was charged with Criminal Attempt and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  He is currently at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center pending a bail detention hearing.

The case will be prosecuted by the Division of Criminal Justice. The press release from the South Plainfield Police Department said, “Charges are mere accusations and the accused is considered innocent until proven guilty.”
