SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Students at Coles Elementary School recently welcomed veterans and serenaded them with patriotic songs as part of the school's Veterans Day observances.

Veterans represented four branches of the military. Alex DePace, the oldest vet at age 93, served as a flight engineer in the air force during WWII and flew in 23 missions over Germany and Austria.

  • Joshua Dooner, U.S. Navy, Bosnia (1993-98)
  • Mike Porcaro, U.S. Army Reserve (1988-94)
  • Ray Britton, U.S. Navy (1969-73)
  • Jim Cookerly, spent three summers in Vietnam
  • Frank Chupko, Vietnam (1968-72)
  • Alex DePace, WWII
  • Robert Jeans, combat veteran, who served 18 months from 1969-70, Commander of VFW Kenilworth Post 2230
