SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- In preparation for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, members of Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains built a Sukkah (booth) on Sunday, September 16.

The Sukkah was constructed by volunteers from the synagogue’s Men’s Club, along with seventh-graders in Congregation Beth Israel’s Religious School and high school students in the synagogue’s youth group, United Synagogue Youth (USY).

In keeping with tradition, the volunteers and students erected the Sukkah on the synagogue’s outdoor patio to replicate the temporary huts that their ancestors dwelled in while wandering in the desert. Throughout the week-long celebration of Sukkot, which begins September 23 at sundown, congregants and Religious School students will be able to eat in the synagogue’s Sukkah
