SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- The No. 7 ranked Scotch Plains-Fanwood girls soccer team originally was supposed to play No. 2 Montclair on Tuesday at a neutral site (Franklin) on Tuesday evening, but the State Group 4 semifinal game has been moved to Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at undefeated Montclair's home field instead.
The move from neutral turf to the opponent's home field comes as a wintry mix is predicted, and temperatures are expected to dip into the 20s in Frankin on Tuesday evening.
"It's not optimal, but I'd rather see the game played under the best conditions possible. Given the weather predictions, it looks like Wednesday afternoon is going to be the best option," said Scotch Plains-Fanwood athletic director Ryan Miller.
According to Miller, the NJSIAA, the governing body for high school sports in New Jersey, is looking to have the Wednesday games played earlier in the afternoon to take advantage of the relative warmth and the sunshine on a day when the sun will set at 4:41 p.m.
Finding a neutral field that could host a tournament game at 1:00 p.m. proved to be difficult. Thus, it will be a home game for Montclair (19-0-2), which is two games away from a potential undefeated season.
Scotch Plains-Fanwood (17-2-2) has not given up a goal during the Sectional tournament. The last goal allowed came on penalty kicks vs. Westfield in the Union County championship game on Oct. 21.
