SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - Senator Cory Booker made an appearance at the Scotch Plains-Fanwood YMCA for Martin Luther King Day in conjunction with the MLK Day of Service activities around the area on Monday.

"We were very pleased and honored when Senator Booker decided to make a surprise visit to the Scotch Plains Fanwood YMCA," said Kim Decker, executive director of the YMCA. "He is working right alongside our teenagers, who are volunteering to put together food for the Plainfield YMCA homeless program. There are a few people who will be eating very well tonight."

Booker was at the YMCA for the Cooking for the Needy Program.

In Fanwood, one of the businesses participating in the MLK Day of Service was Be Craftul on Martine Avenue, where kids were invited to make crafts and other creations on Monday afternoon.

Fifty-nine volunteers came to Be Craftful to make decorations and Valentine's Day cards for children at Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside.

"My background's always been in community development and I looked at this as a huge opportunity to engage Be Craftful as a business that can help others and bring happiness to others, as well," said Amy Boroff, owner of Be Craftful.

Michelle Shapiro Abraham, one of the MLK Day of Service organizers, said, "We filled almost 600 volunteer slots."

Also, volunteers made 500 sandwiches for the Salvation Army, 100 snack packs for HomeFirst and 600 dog treats.

This week's Parshah (Torah reading) is the Parshah of Pinchas the Zealot: the courageous young priest who stood up against idolatry and immorality and, in the end, saved Israel from a devastating plague.

While Pinchas' radical response made him a hero worthy of having a Torah section named after him, we wouldn't necessarily suggest to our children ...
