LAKEWOOD, NJ --Union Catholic opened its season with three big victories at Friday's Battle at Ocean County Park.

In the girls competition, the Vikings, the defending state Non-Public A champions, captured both the Senior Division and Freshman Division team championships.

While on the boys side, UC's Myles Plummer opened lots of eyes with a sensational high school debut when he won the Freshman Division race by covering the 3,200-meter course in 10:08. Plummer won the race by four seconds over runner-up Jack Moran of Wall Township. .

In the Senior Division girls race, Jerika Lufrano finished second in the 5K race in 18:36, Megan McCabe was 16th in 20:34, and Monika Wlodarski placed 24th in 21:05 to give the Vikings a winning total of 36 points, two points ahead of runner-up Colts Neck.

Abby Granrath led the charge for the Vikings in the Freshman Division by placing second over the 3,200-meter course in 12:17. Jenna Keith was fifth for UC in 12:31, and Daniela Peralta finished 13th in 13:15 for a first-place score of 18 points. Southern Regional was second with 28.

In the Junior Division girls race, Zoe Lee placed 12th for the Vikings in 19:57.

Meanwhile, in the Junior Division boys race, UC's Zach Turner placed 39th in 17:38, Andrew Palacio was 78th in 18:27, and Daniel Labrie was 79th in 18:28. Matt Swinehart ran 18:55 to finish 92nd for UC in the Senior Division race
