Joachim Prinz was a prominent Newark rabbi, a refugee from Hitler’s Germany, and a Civil Rights activist, who was an organizer of the August 28, 1963 March on Washington.  Rabbi Prinz marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as an ally.

On Sunday, Sept. 17, Social Justice Matters, Inc., in partnership with R Squared Productions and Temple Sholom (1925 Lake Ave., Scotch Plains), will screen “I Shall Not be Silent,” a documentary film about Rabbi Prinz. A workshop that will synthesize the content of the film will follow. Participants will be led through a social identity education process to identify and explore each of their own multiple social identities. The concept of being an ally will be explored. The group will then begin to consider how each individual can work for social justice, inspired by the example of Rabbi Prinz.

A limited number of seats are available, free of charge, to community members who would like to attend the film and workshop. Please register by emailing lsm@socialjusticematters, or by pasting this link into your browser: http://evite.me/5kXhJvsEHr

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.

April 21, 2018
