WESTFIELD, NJ — Duke’s Deli, a shop with a long history in Westfield, reopened recently under new owners Asad and Sofia Hussain as Duke's Deli & Convenience. The couple, with staff and their family, celebrated Saturday with free tastings of Indian and Pakistani food and a ribbon cutting with Mayor Andy Skibitsky, representatives of the Downtown Westfield Corporation and members of the Greater Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

The original Duke’s Deli was a Westfield staple, known for its sub sandwiches. That restaurant closed more than 10 years ago and has since been both a pasta bar and a bakery. Duke’s was resurrected in the same spot, 339 South Avenue West (across from the train station) by former Duke’s employee Dominic DeStefanis in 2015.

Now under the Hussains, Duke’s new menu includes homemade Indian and Pakistani specialties such as chicken tikka masala, samosas, kabobs and biryani as well as sandwiches, fresh salads, falafel, empanadas and breakfast sandwiches to eat in or take out. Coffee, slushies and ice cream are available, too.

In addition, customers can pick up convenience items there including groceries, lottery tickets, tobacco and household items.

“We feel very welcome here. The response has been great,” Asad Hussain said. “Thanks to Sherry Cronin of the Downtown Westfield Corporation, thanks to Jackie Lieberman and TAPinto, thanks to the neighborhood, it’s been awesome. People here are very supportive.”
