EMS Week 2020 reminds me of what my 22 years as a volunteer with the Fanwood Rescue Squad have meant to me.
To be able to help people in such an immediate way at the most vulnerable moments of their lives is truly a privilege. I've been in the living rooms, bedrooms, basements, porches and backyards of many of our residents over the years. They've trusted me and my EMS partners to help while respecting them, their families and their privacy.
After responding to a couple thousand calls, a few stand out, like those that resulted in a life saved and our non-stop duty during and after Hurricane Sandy.
I don't ride as much as I used to, but when I do, it reminds me of what's important -- putting others before yourself.
What the Fanwood Rescue Squad does is the definition of community service. Thanks to the members who respond today and to those who wrote the squad's history.
