To the Residents of Scotch Plains & Fanwood:
On Memorial Day, The Borough of Fanwood and Township of Scotch Plains will pay tribute to our fallen heroes in Virtual Wreath Laying Ceremonies, speeches and song at 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. respectively.
A procession honoring the American servicemen and women who gave their lives to secure the freedoms we have today will take place on Park Ave. in Scotch Plains immediately after the ceremony, as will the singing of God Bless America. We encourage all residents to join in the singing which will be broadcast live on Facebook, Fanwood TV , and SPTV (FiOS Ch. 22 and Comcast Ch. 34).
We regret that these ceremonies are closed to the public but, we are grateful for the technology that can bring the ceremonies to our residents. Only Veteran’s, First Responders and Memorial Day Committee members, including Mayors Mahr and Smith, will be in attendance.
We respectfully remind all residents to please follow the stay home rule. We invite you to view the ceremonies and tributes by our Scouts live on SPTV (FiOS ch. 22 and Comcast ch. 34) and broadcast later in the day on Fanwood TV (Fios ch. 24 and Comcast ch. 35) or watch live on Scotch Plains Township Facebook and Fanwood Borough Facebook.
Please participate in a moment of silence at 3:00 pm for a tolling of the bells, as part of the National Moment of Remembrance. Bells will be tolled 12 times in Fanwood and 21 times in Scotch Plains in honor of each town’s fallen heroes. We thank the houses of worship in our communities for their participation in this memorial. More information can be found by clicking here.
Recordings will be shown on the local cable channels later in the day, scheduled for 3:00 pm to coincide with the ringing of the bells.
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Gold Star Virtual Concert with performances from our friends and neighbors will launch at 6 p.m. on the cable stations and Facebook.
As a special remembrance of our fallen heroes, there will be a Memorial Day Weekend video tribute by Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from both towns on the SPTV and Fanwood TV starting on Saturday with several reruns during the day. These tributes will also be posted on the towns’ Facebook pages. Watch and learn about our veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our Country.
Stay safe, be well and keep all those who've made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of others in your thoughts and prayers this Memorial Day.

Al Smith, Mayor of Scotch Plains, and
