The Fanwood Memorial Library "Close the Gap" fundraising campaign has surpassed its $10,000 goal. Begun in mid-December by the board of trustees to partially make up for years of decreased municipal funding and increased patron demand, the campaign closed in mid-February.

The board is grateful to all of the residents and library users who gave so generously.   The level of overall support reflects the enthusiasm and commitment the community has for the town’s library.

“Both 2014 and 2015 look to be very exciting years for the library and the borough,” said Mayor Colleen Mahr.  “The response to the Close the Gap campaign makes it clear that the library is an integral part of what makes Fanwood such a great community.”

The donations will be used to improve the circulating collection at the library.  Residents can expect to see scores of new books and DVDs added to our all parts collection and, in addition, the library will be able to upgrade some of its technology hardware.

Like other libraries nationwide, the Fanwood library is experiencing unprecedented usage. To help maintain popular services, programs, and collections, it is devising creative partnerships and solutions, like this campaign.  Although the monies don’t close the entire gap between increased patron demand and decreased funding, they will have a noticeable impact on the materials currently available to all users.

“The community’s continued support for the library is fantastic.  The Board and I are very grateful to have such an engaged user base,” said Sheldon Ross, president of the library board of trustees.  “We look forward to hearing from residents as we continue to move forward with our strategic plan."

Sinai or Sanctuary?

And in the beginning, G‑d was homeless, and so G‑d asked His people to set Him up with some digs. Where does it say that? Well, nowhere, actually. But it does say that G‑d instructed Moses to tell the people, “They shall make for Me a Sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.”

Now the question is, was G‑d really homeless? ...

As a 26-year-old Scotch Plains resident who cares more about the well-being of our town than about local politics, I am extremely disappointed that the Scotch Plains Democratic Committee leadership has decided to abandon Colleen Mahr in her run for Chair of the Union County Democratic Committee.

Mahr, who as Mayor of Fanwood for 15 years has worked closely with Scotch Plains ...
