FANWOOD, NJ -- Fanwood is mourning to death of longtime volunteer firefighter Len Zuchowski, age 97, who died over the weekend on on July 6, 2019.
Mr. Zuchowski was born in Metuchen on May 17, 1922, graduated from Newark Central High School in 1940, and immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor, enlisted in the Marine Corps. For the next four years, he served with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific Theater and earned five Battle Stars for participating in the three Guadalcanal Campaigns, the Peleliu Campaign, and the Cape Gloucester Campaign. As a member of the 1st Marine Division Recon Team he was awarded 2 Presidential Unit Citations, the American Campaign Medal, the Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, the WW II Victory Medal, and the N.J. Distinguished Service Medal.
Upon his return to civilian life, he married his high school sweetheart, Irene Kassay, in 1945, and in 1954 moved to Fanwood, where they raised two girls, Carol and Jeanne. For the next 62 years Mr. Zuchowski was a fixture in the community, where he devoted 55 years to the Fanwood Volunteer Fire Department. Professionally, he rose to manage the New Brunswick Office of William Bruckmann Insurance Co. and retired in 1986.
Len was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Irene, and his daughter, Carol Simon. He is survived by his daughter Jeanne DiNicola of Seattle, WA., his three grandchildren Eric Simon, Matthew DiNicola, and Leslie DiNicola, and his two great-grandchildren, Zara Simon and Zack Simon.
Relatives and friends are invited to the viewing on Thursday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Bradley Funeral Home Rt. 73 and Evesham Rd. in Marlton, NJ, where a Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be private.
