FANWOOD, NJ – At the Fanwood Borough Council meeting on Tuesday, New Jersey American Water Co. manager of field operations Michael Bange detailed the work that will soon be done to replace and upgrade aging water lines that date back to 1918.

The first stage of the $5 million project calls for full replacement of 12- to 16-foot water mains along Martine Avenue between South Ave. and Trenton Ave.

The second stage includes cleaning water pipes of smaller sizes. Impacted streets will include: Gere Pl., Kempshall Terr., Chetwood Terr., Cray Terr., Vinton Circle, Helen St., Belvidere Avenue, Burns Way, Herbert Avenue, Marian Avenue, Second St., Poplar Pl., Klaniecki Pl., MacLennan Pl., Beech Avenue, LaGrande Avenue, Laurel Pl., First St., Clement Pl., and Winfield Pl.

American Water is responsible for shutting off the valves at the curbs. Work will be conducted on Martine Ave. overnights from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.  On residential streets, the work will take place from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

“Residents will be without water for a period of about one hour when the work takes place in front of their homes,” Michael Bange explained.  “There will be lights at night and noise, so there will be a little inconvenience.”

“There will be digging on front lawns,” Bange continued.  “Any damage to homeowners’ properties will immediately be fixed seamlessly.”

Bange said that homeowners will not be billed for the capital costs but that the water company assesses a Distribution System Improvement Charge (DSIC) in their monthly statements. The DSIC charges cover projects such as the one Fanwood is undertaking.

“This is a huge investment in our infrastructure and will address the longstanding water pressure issue in the borough,” said Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr.
