MADISON, NJ -- The 2016 New Jersey YMCA Gymnastics League A & B Division State Championship meets were held at the Madison Area YMCA on Sunday, May 15, 2016.
The day started with the B Division Level 6 meet. The Fanwood-Scotch Plains gymnasts placed 2nd behind the Madison Y hosts, who captured the first place trophy in all divisions. The FSPY gymnasts had many individual champions.
Ava Fazio and Olivia Alicante competed in the 10 and under age group for FSPY. Alicante was named the B Division Level 6 State Champion on Vault and Balance Beam.
The 11 year old age group was a large group. Four gymnasts from FSPY competed in this age group. Jillian Miele captured 4th place on Vault and 5th place on the Uneven Bars. Emma Nobile tied with Miele for the 4th place podium spot on Vault. Madalyn McEvoy earned 5th place for her Balance Beam routine. Elizabeth Parvin rounded out the FSPY contingent competing well on all four events.
The three FSPY 12 year old age also enjoyed a good meet. Kayla Morrow was awarded the Bronze medal on Vault and placed 6th on Balance Beam. Caitlin Maughan received the 5th place award for her Floor Exercise performance. Lauren Fitzgerald put in strong performances for the team on all four events.
Marlena Holston was the only FSPY representative in the 13 and over age group, placing 5th on Floor Exercise.
The Level 7 B Division gymnasts competed next, also ended the day in 2nd place behind Madison. The four gymnasts competing in the 13 and under age group all worked hard to put in strong routines. Ella Platts came home with the 6th place All Around medal, supported with strong 5th place finishes on both Vault and Balance Beam. Cadence Weiss, Lenore Ferguson and Zoe Wernsing contributed to the team’s placement against a strong field of competitors.
The 14 and over age group saw Sara Banasiak earning the silver medal on Balance Beam and the Bronze medal on the Uneven Bars. Nicalina DelRosario took home the silver medal for her performance on the Floor Exercise and the bronze medal on Vault.
The FSPY A Team placed 3rd behind the teams from Madison and Somerset Valley with 6 gymnasts competing at this level. In the 14 and under age group, Naomi Southerland was awarded the Bronze medal on Balance Beam. Ava McKenzie placed 5th on Vault and 4th on the Uneven Bars.
The 15 and over gymnasts saw Rachel Tang standing on the 6th place spot of the All Around podium. Tang also received the Bronze medal on Balance Beam. Kristy Cerini was named the State Champion for her solid performance on the Balance Beam. Cerini also placed 4th on the Uneven Bars. Abby Kennedy shared the podium with her teammate, tying for 4th on Vault. The majority of the FSPY A & B team gymnasts are looking forward to the National Championship meet at the end of June.
