SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA and the Scotch Plains-Fanwood PTA Council are partnering up to host the United For A Cause 5K and 1-mile Fun Run, held virtually this year.
The virtual run will take place between May 5 and 12, 2021. Proceeds benefit the Y’s LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program for cancer survivors and fund a Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Scholarship for a graduating senior pursuing an interest in a health-related field.
“We are thrilled to be able to partner with the PTA for our race again this year. The race is part of the Scotch Plains Mayors Wellness Campaign and has become a signature event in the local community,” said Donna Peart, race director and the Y’s Director of Healthy Living.
She continued, “Through the years, we have seen first-hand how the funds raised have helped individuals in our community, whether its cancer survivors looking to heal in mind, body and spirit, or students who are looking to devote their careers to helping others.”
Since the inception of United for a Cause 10 years ago, 357 cancer survivors have completed the Y’s LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program, and $15,000 has been awarded to nine high school students for their education.
"The Scotch Plains-Fanwood PTA is proud to once again partner with the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA to raise funds for the PTA Health and Wellness Scholarship and LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program,” said Regina Gannon, president of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood PTA Council. “Half the proceeds from this event go toward a scholarship for a high school senior pursuing studies in a health and wellness field. Past recipients of the scholarship have gone on to study Biology, Kinesiology, Neuroscience and Chemistry, to name a few. Recipients are chosen through a rigorous application and review process facilitated by the Scotch Plains Fanwood Scholarship Foundation.”
This year, with the updated virtual format, United For A Cause participants can run/walk the 5K or 1-mile Fun Run and record their time into the online system. Runners can enter their time between May 5 and May 12, 2021. Emails will go out the week before the race with the link to enter times.
Participants can run on their own or with a small group. They also can ask family and friends to sponsor their run. Goodie bags will be given to the first 100 registrants and all runners who submit their time will be entered into a raffle to win a prize.
“We hope this race inspires you to be healthy, have fun and kick off summer by supporting the community,” Donna Peart said. “Whether you’re a veteran runner or new to 5Ks, it’s the perfect event for all ages and levels.”
Added Regina Gannon: “We hope that not only our school communities, but the entire SPF community will come out and support these two worthwhile causes. And, for those non-runners out there, not to worry! I'll be walking a 5K course right along with you."
