FANWOOD, NJ -- During the month of December, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary club will sell Luminaries at the Fanwood Department of Public Works Building on Manfra Way off North Avenue (across from the Fanwood Public Library). The sale dates are December 3, 10, 11, 17, 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Christmas Eve. 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The luminary kits cost 75 cents apiece in all quantities and include paper bags, candles and sand. Customers are encouraged to bring buckets, boxes or plastic bags to transport the sand.

Luminaries are traditionally used to illuminate the streets on Christmas Eve.  A candle is nestled in sand at the bottom of a paper bag and placed along sidewalks to create a beautiful walkway.  Some neighborhoods in the area get together and buy hundreds of kits for an amazing luminary display.

All proceeds from the sale will be used to fund the various charitable and humanitarian projects that Rotary supports, both locally and overseas. The Rotary Club will also collect canned food for their annual Holiday Food Drive to support local food pantries.

Sinai or Sanctuary?

And in the beginning, G‑d was homeless, and so G‑d asked His people to set Him up with some digs. Where does it say that? Well, nowhere, actually. But it does say that G‑d instructed Moses to tell the people, “They shall make for Me a Sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.”

Now the question is, was G‑d really homeless? ...

Dear Editor:

I’m proud to support Colleen Mahr for Chair of the Union County Democratic Committee  (UCDC) and am encouraging my Scotch Plains peers to join me.

I was a first time candidate wanting to make a difference in my hometown of Scotch Plains, when Mayor Mahr of neighboring Fanwood stepped in to help me campaign and win my election to be Councilwoman three years ago.
