SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Fire gutted a two-story home on Crestwood Road near North Avenue Thursday evening. As of 8:45 p.m., the fire was still active, with firefighters from Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Westfield, Mountainside, Clark and Berkeley Heights working to bring the blaze under control.

No one was home when the fire broke out, according to Scotch Plains Fire Chief John Lestarchick, and no firefighters were injured. A woman who lived in the home told TAPinto that her dog had died in the fire.

The fire department responded to multiple calls reporting the fire at about 7:30 p.m., according to Lestarchick.

"Someone was getting gas at the Lukoil station and called 911. By the time we got there, fire was blazing on the first and second floor," said Lestarchick. “It was just such a big house and so much fire on arrival, there was nothing we could do with it.”

The Union County investigator determined that the cause of the blaze was accidental. Firefighters worked to try to revive the dog, but could not save it.
