SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The heart is undoubtedly our most crucial organ, and heart disease continues to be the number one cause of the death in the U.S. Because February is Heart Health month, it is time to take charge and ensure that your heart is in good shape!
The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that adults engage in a minimum of either 150 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise spread over five days (i.e. 30 minutes a day) or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise spread over three days (i.e. 25 minutes a day). These minimum recommendations serve as a baseline for adults to help decrease risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, as well as a very important weapon in the fight against obesity. But to achieve the heart benefiting results from aerobic activity, you must sufficiently tax your neuromuscular system, i.e. you must push yourself beyond your comfort zone, not simply walk in the park!
You have two goals when it comes to cardiovascular (AKA aerobic) training:
- You want to strengthen your heart and lungs and
- You want to strip away your excess body fat
If you are working out at moderate pace, your body requires at least 20 minutes of steady-state activity before it even begins the process of burning your body fat. That is the reason you need at least a 30 minute aerobic activity per day for 5x/week. This will help you not only get your heart in shape, but also lower your body fat. You can achieve similar results through a vigorous workout, by reducing the frequency to 3x/week. But until you hit these levels, progress may be slow or nonexistent.
There are many types of aerobic activities that we can undertake, including jogging, biking, swimming, or rowing, to name a few. Although walking is good, to truly tap into your aerobic potential try, power walking! You have to push yourself enough to build up a good sweat and be exerting yourself to be able to talk… but not speak in full sentences.
