WESTFIELD, NJ – Troupe of Friends returns to Mindowaskin Park after a one-year hiatus with free performances of Shakespeare's “Macbeth” on Aug. 31, Sept. 1, and Sept. 2, 2017. Shows begin at 8 p.m. each evening.

Joe Penczak, president of the community theater group Troupe of Friends and “Macbeth” director, provided a plot summary to entice theater patrons of all ages.

“The play follows the murderous path Macbeth carves out in order to become King of Scotland. Intrigued by the prophecy of three witches who announce he will become king, and spurred on by his fiendish wife to destroy all those who stand in his way, the play dramatizes the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake,” Penczak said. “Macbeth attains the crown, but his hold remains tenuous, as those around him come to believe he committed unspeakable deeds to obtain the throne.”

“Macbeth” will feature the talents of actors from Westfield and many other towns throughout New Jersey.

As a life-long performer and supporter of the arts, Penczak described his personal connection to the Troupe of Friends.

“The core founders of Troupe of Friends were a half dozen [McKinley] parents with that background,” Penczak said. “We got to talking about how fun it would be to have Shakespeare in the park. I feel this is a great way to keep high-quality classical theater – Shakespeare, in particular – readily accessible to our community.”

He added, “It’s always been my hope to keep this free so that it would become another creative entertainment option available for all ages.”

Play attendees are invited to bring blankets or chairs for use during the show. In the event of rain, performances will move indoors to the Community Room at 425 E. Broad St.

While performance do remain free of charge, donations to the 501(c)(3) corporation are gladly accepted at all shows. For more information, visit

Routines, maintenance and sustainability are not their strong points. They respond to excitement and challenge, not to the uneventful, monotonous daily grind.
