FSPY 30+ Men’s Basketball League Kicks Off Season

FANWOOD/SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men’s 30+ Basketball League tipped off its 9th season on Dec. 3, with eight teams dreaming about cutting down the nets in March.
 
Game #1
Winning team: Talkin’ Bout Practice (60)
Losing team: Triples ‘n Dimes (35)
 
Talkin’ ran out to a 17-point halftime advantage and never kept quiet, led by Joe DeGennaro’s 21 points. Eric Halpin (15 pts, 7 boards), Capt. Scott Lowder (13 & 7), and Mike Ruccio (7 & 11) were major contributors for the victors. TND was paced by Stephen Murray’s 13 pts, and an 11-pt, 8-rebound outing from last year’s league MVP Rich Cobbinah.

Winning team: Game Over (62)
Losing team: Basket Brawlers (55)

In a nip-and-tuck affair, the game wasn’t over until G.O. pulled away in the final minutes behind Capt. Gavin Ford’s near triple double (18-10-7). Clay Torres (15 pts, 9 rebs) and Geoff Gonzalez (13 pts) both drilled three from behind the arc, and David Ferreiro chipped in with 9 tallies for the winners.  Brawler Warren Lowe had a game-high 19 pts, while Kevin Adams and James “Big Smooth” Patrick netted 10 each for B.B.

Winning team: Throwbacks (76)
Losing team: Droppin’ Dimes (45)

Throwbacks, propelled by Capt. Jamal Berry’s 23 pts, shot a blistering 60% from the floor, and connected on 10 three-pointers, cruising to victory after a competitive first half. Jason Shann had four of his team’s triples, finishing with 16 pts, while Jason Holley (10 & 8) and rookies Soji Ojugbele (10 pts) and Orlando Jean-Charles (8 pts) were solid. Droppin’ was spearheaded by its guard duo of Eljay Aguillo (14 pts) and Capt. Brian Ciemneicki (11 pts), and center Craig Cichocki (10 & 8).

Winning team: Run It Back! (42)
Losing team:  Team 8 (37)

The league’s #1 overall draft choice, Greg Josephsen, scored 18 pts, Gregg Carder had 9 pts and 6 caroms, and Capt. Tom St. John added 6 pts & 9 rebs, as R.I.B.! held off Team 8 in the day’s nightcap.  Team 8’s Chris Burke led all players with 19 points.  Brendan Ryan put in 8, and Omar Glover snared 9 rebs in defeat.
