FANWOOD/SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Holiday cheer reverberated throughout the gym, as the ballers of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men’s 30+ Basketball League took the floor for one last time in 2017.

Game #1
Winning team: Basket Brawlers (72)
Losing team:   Droppin’ Dimes  (70)

Warren Lowe drained a 25-ft, game-winning three-pointer from the top of the circle at the buzzer, as two teams thirsty for their first win battled in an instant classic.  Lowe finished with 22 pts and 11 assists, BB’s James Patrick & Kevin Adams netted 14 apiece, and Chris Beaudry cleaned the glass (18 rebs, 11 pts). Just seconds before Lowe’s heroics, Brian Ciemneicki’s driving layup had given D.D. a 70-69 advantage. Ciemneicki tallied 19 pts and dropped 7 dimes, with Steve Lee (18 pts, 9 boards) on the receiving end of many of those helpers. Eljay Aguillo (15 pts) and center Craig Cichocki (12 & 14) were solid in defeat.

Game #2
Winning team:  Throwbacks (62)
Losing team:   Run It Back! (35)

Up by 21 at halftime, The Throwbacks coasted, and are the league’s lone remaining unbeaten.  Jamal Berry led the way with 19 pts & 8 caroms, rookie Orlando Jean-Charles put home 16, and Jason Shann contributed 13 for the victors.  RIB! was paced by Greg Josephsen (9) and Graham Haskell (8), while first-year big Mark Van Ostenbridge pulled down 9 rebounds.

Game #3
Winning team:  Game Over (56)
Losing team:   Talkin’ ‘Bout Practice (48)

Sophomore standout Clay Torres double-doubled (18 & 10, 8-8 FTs), and front court mates Gavin Ford (12) and David Ferreiro (11) each hit double digits, as G.O. held off a pesky bunch of talkers. TBP received 17 pts from Capt. Scott Lowder, 13 from veteran Eric Halpin, and an 8-pt, 9-rebound outing from Joe DeGennaro in a losing cause.

Game #4
Winning team: Triples ‘n Dimes (46)
Losing team:    Team 8 (38)

TND jumped out to a 30-12 margin at intermission, and survived a Team 8 comeback effort thanks to a balanced scoring attack – Stephen Murray (12), Rich Cobbinah (10 pts, 12 rebs), Doug Barker (9) and Tim Gray (9). Team 8’s scoring column was equally as balanced – Brendan Ryan (11), Capt. Blake Sonnek-Schmelz (10), Chris Burke (9) and Anand Desai (8), but Eight was not enough to avert an 0-3 start to its season.

FSPY 30+ STANDINGS:

  1. Throwbacks               3-0
  2. Game Over                2-1
  3. Run It Back!               2-1
