FSPY Gymnasts Are State Champions

FANWOOD/SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- All three of The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA’s gymnastics teams competed in the NJ YMCA State Championship meet during the weekend of May 20-21. The “C” division competed at home on May 20, while the “A” and “B” divisions competed at the Madison Area YMCA on May 21.

The 2017 State Champion “C” Division Gymnastic team was represented by 15 gymnasts. They competed in four different age groups. Julia Ferguson was named the State Champion on Vault and Floor, the All-Around Medalist and on Bars and earned a 4th place medal on Balance Beam in the 9 and under age group.  Xing Liao was the Bronze medalist on Balance Beam and earned a 5th place medal on Vault.

Alice Ping earned the All-Around State Champion title, and was named State Champion on Bars and Floor, earning a Silver Medal on Vault and Balance Beam in the 10 year-old age group. Sophia Catalano earned the State Champion title on Vault, was named the All-Around Silver Medalist, as well as on Bars and Floor, and earned a 5th place medal on Balance Beam. Olivia Stelzer won a Bronze Medal for her Beam routine. Remy Batista also competed in this age group.

The All-Around State Champion in the 11 year-old age group was Jessica Dianda, who was also named the State Champion on Bars. Dianda also earned a Silver Medal on Floor, a Bronze Medal on Balance Beam and a 4th place medal on Vault. Tehya Stephens was named the State Champion on Balance Beam, the All-Around Silver Medalist and a Bronze Medalist on Floor.  Jasmine Johnson earned her place as the State Champion on Vault, and brought home the All-Around Bronze Medal and the 4th place medal on Floor.  The Silver Medal on Bars was awarded to Sarah Sicoli, who also earned 5th place medals on Balance Beam and All-Around. Sara Lehman was awarded the Floor State Champion title and earned the Silver Medal on Vault. The Silver Medal on Balance Beam went to Taylor Clement. Eva Pereira was awarded 5th and 6th place medals on Vault and Balance Beam, respectively.

Olivia Stahley earned the 2017 12 and over All-Around State Champion honors. Stahley was also named State Champion on Vault, a Silver Medalist on Balance Beam, and the Bronze Medalist on Bars and Floor. Jessica Glander captured the State Champion title on Bars and the Bronze Medal on Vault. 

Level 8, “A” division was represented by Ava McKenzie and Rachel Tang, placed 7th on Bars in the 15 and over age group. Both gymnasts are looking forward to competing at the YMCA National Championship meet next month.

The “B” Division competed in two different levels at the meet. The Second place Level 7 team was comprised of Jillian Miele, Ella Platts, Kayla Morrow, Zoe Wernsing, and Nicalina DelRosario.  

Ella Platts earned Bronze medals on Vault and Floor while Jillian Miele took home a 5th place medal on Floor in the12 and under age group.

The Silver Medal on Vault went home with Kayla Morrow, who also earned a Bronze Medal on Floor and a 4th place medal on Bars in the 13 and over age group. Zoe Wernsing won the Bronze Medal on Balance Beam and a 4th place medal on Vault. The Bronze Medal on Vault was won by Nicalina DelRosario, who also won the 4th place medals on Floor and All-Around.

The “B” Division Level 6 team took home the Second place trophy for their tremendous efforts during the competition.  Eleven girls competed in four different age groups. 

The10 year old age group was represented by Olivia Alicante, Spencer Doran, and Ava Fazio. Alicante took home 4th place medals on Vault and Balance Beam and 5th place medals on Floor and All-Around. Ava Fazio took home a 5th place medal on Balance Beam. 

Ashley Sekiya was the lone representative in the 11 year old age group.  She is the 2017 State Champion on Vault, the Silver Medalist on Floor and earned a 5th place medal on Balance Beam.

The 12 year old age group was represented by Elizabeth Parvin, Emma Nobile, and Alana Beardsley. Parvin won the Bronze Medal on Floor while Nobile took home the 4th place medal on the same event.

Caitlin Maughan was named the 2017 All-Around State Champion in the 13 and over age group.  She also earned the State Champion title on Bars, Balance Beam and Floor. Madalyn McEvoy earned Silver Medals on Vault and Beam. Lauren Fitzgerald was awarded the State Champion title on Vault, Silver Medalist on Floor, and Bronze Medalist on Bars and All-Around. Isabella Cukrow also represented this age group.

Gymnastics classes offered at the YMCA include parent-toddler, preschool and school age classes.Registration is open for summer gymnastics camp. The Y also offers dance and sports classes and Birthday parties. The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA (FSPY) 13 and Over Swim Team Finishes 6th at State Championship
