FSPY Gymnasts Qualify For Nationals

FANWOOD/SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- All three of The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA’s gymnastics teams competed this past weekend; the A and B divisions competed at Madison Area YMCA, while the C division competed at Somerset County YMCA.

Level 8, A division was represented by Ava McKenzie, Kristy Cerini, and Abby Kennedy, who all qualified for Nationals in Savannah, Georgia in June. 

The girls competed in two age groups. McKenzie placed 5th on Bars and 6th on Vault in the 14 and under age group. Kennedy was awarded second place All-Around in the 16 and over age group while placing 2nd on Bars and Beam, and 3rd on Vault. Cerini placed 3rd All-Around for the 16 and over age group.

The B Division competed in two different levels at the meet. Level 7 was represented by seven girls in three different age groups. Ella Platts finished in 1st place All-Around, taking 1st on Bars, Beam, and Floor in the 12 and under age group.  Jillian Miele took 2nd place on Beam.  Both girls qualified for Nationals.

Kayla Morrow, representing the 13 & 14 year old age group,  placed 5th on Vault and Floor, 6th All-Around, and 7th on Bars.  Cadence Weiss took home 4th place on Vault, 6th place on Bars and Beam, and 7th place All-Around.  Lenore Ferguson placed 6th on Floor, while teammate Zoe Wernsing was awarded 5th on Beam.

Sara Banasiak was the lone representative in the 15 and over age group. She took home a 2nd place finish on Bars.

The B Division Level 6 team competed in four different age groups. Olivia Alicante, in the 10 year old age group, took home 1st place on Beam and 2nd place finishes on Vault, Bars and All-Around. Spencer Doran earned a 2nd place finish on Floor, and 3rd place finishes on Bars, Beam and All-Around. Both girls qualified for Nationals.

Ashley Sekiya was the lone representative in the 11 year old age group and placed 3rd on Vault, 5th on Beam and All-Around and 6th on Floor. She also qualified for Nationals.

Ava Jacobsen took 3rd place on Vault, 5th place on Floor and 6th place on Bars and All-Around, qualifying for Nationals along with teammates Elizabeth Parvin and Alana Beardsley, in the 12 year old age group. Beardsley placed 4th on Bars, while Parvin was awarded 4th on Beam.  Emma Nobile also represented this age group putting in strong performances on all four events.

Second place on Bars in the 13 and over age group went to Madalyn McEvoy, who also earned a 2nd place finish on Floor. Teammate Caitlin Maughan captured 1st place in the All-Around as well as 1st place on Beam and Floor.  Maughan also took home 3rd place on Bars.  Lauren Fitzgerald finished in 1st place on both Bars and Beam, and 2nd place finishes on Vault and All-Around, earning a spot on the National team along with McEvoy and Maughan. Isabella Cukrow won a 3rd place finish on floor.

The C Division team was represented by 17 gymnasts who competed in four different age groups. 

First place All-Around, in the 9 and under age group, was won by Julia Ferguson, who also captured first place on Vault, 3rd on Beam, 4th place on Floor, and 8th place on Bars. Ava Bozetarnik placed 5th in the All-Around and 6th on Vault, Bars and Floor. Xing Liao and Eva Seganish also competed in this age group.

Alice Ping was awarded 1st place All-Around, in the 10 year-old age group. Ping also earned 1st place on Bars and Beam, 2nd place on Vault and 4th place on Floor. Sophia Catalano earned 1st place on Vault and Floor, 4th place All-Around and 5th place on Beam. Remy Batista went home with 2nd place on Beam. Rounding out this age group was Olivia Stelzer who placed 3rd on Bars and 6th on Vault.

First place All-Around in the 11 year-old age group was earned by Jasmine Johnson, who also took, 2nd on Beam, 4th on Vault and Floor, and 6th on Bars. Tehya Stephens placed 2nd in the All-Around, Vault and Bars and 3rd place on Floor.  First place on Bars was won by Jessica Dianda, who also took 2nd on Floor, and 3rd All-Around. Sara Lehman earned 1st place on Vault and Floor, and 6th on Beam, while Sarah Sicoli placed 2nd on Beam and 3rd on Bars. Eva Pereira took home 5th place on Vault and Balance Beam, and Taylor Clement placed 4th on Beam.

Olivia Stahley took home 3rd place on Floor and 4th on Beam, in the 12 and over age group. Jessica Glander placed 2nd on Floor.

Gymnastics classes offered at the YMCA include parent-toddler, preschool and school age classes.  They are offered Monday through Saturday.
