TOMS RIVER, NJ -- The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA “FSPY” Swim Team placed third overall out of all New Jersey YMCA Swim Teams at the NJ YMCA 12 and Under State Championships hosted by the Ocean County YMCA in Toms River, New Jersey, from February 24-26, 2017. Twenty-two individuals and eight relay teams scored points for FSPY by placing 16th or higher. Numerous team records, a YMCA National cut time, and many personal best times were also achieved by the swimmers.
For the 11/12s, Darien Betances dominated the competition by placing first in the finals of every event he competed in: 50, 100 and 200 Breast, 100 Fly, 100 Individual Medley (IM), 50 Free, and 50 Fly. Abby DiGiorgio led the way for the 11/12 Girls, placing 1St in the 50, 100 and 200 Breast, 11th in the 200 IM, 13th in 200 Fly, and 14th in the 500 Free. DiGiorgio also earned a YMCA National cut time, qualifying her to compete at the 2017 YMCA Short Course National Championships in North Carolina in April. Corey He placed 1st in the 500 Free, 2nd in the 200 Free and 200 Fly, 3rd in the 100 Fly, 200 Back and 200 IM, and 5th in the 200 Breast. Additional 11/12 FSPY members who placed in the top 16 and scored points included: Jenna Aldana (50 and 100 Free), Nicole Ben-David (50 and 100 Fly), Brandon Cortez (50, 100 and 200 Breast), Chloe Howell (50 and 100 Free), Ryan Kim (100 Free, 200 Breast), Cameron Linenberg (50 and 100 Fly), Dylan Negron (50, 100, and 200 Back), Richard Park (50, 100 and 200 Fly, 100 IM), Hirad Sharifian (100 and 200 IM, 50 and 100 Free), Aidan Trenery (50, 100 and 200 Back, 100 and 200 Fly, 200 IM, and 100 Breast).
Billie Rose Sherratt was the FSPY 9/10 Girls highest point scorer, placing 2nd in the 200 Free, 3rd in the 50 and 100 Back, 4th in the 100 Fly, and 6th in the 50 Fly and 100 IM. Owen Waibel led the way for the boys, placing 1st in the 50 Breast, 3rd in the 50 Free, 6th in the 100 Breast, 7th in the 100 IM, 8th in the 100 Free, and 14th in the 200 Free. Additional 9/10 swimmers who placed in the top 16 and scored points for FSPY included: Victoria Gee (50 and 100 Breast), Caitlyn Falkowski (50 Back), Laura Kim (50 and 100 Breast, 50 Fly), Ryan Jawor (50 and 100 Back, 100 and 200 Free), Meghan Lai (50 Back), Haley Oliver (50 and 100 Back), and Evan Weber (100 Fly).
The 11/12 Boys Medley and Freestyle Relays teams of Trenery, Betances, He and Sharifian placed 1st in both events. For the 11/12 girls, the Free Relay team of Aldana, Julia Bonhote, Ben-David and Howell placed 3rd, while the Medley Relay Team of Lily Hughes, DiGiorgio, Howell and Aldana placed 4th. For the 9/10 Girls, the Medley Relay team of Oliver, Gee, Sherratt and Kim placed 5th, and the Free Relay Team of Kim, Oliver, Paulina Nowak and Sherratt also placed 5th. The 9/10 Boys Medley Relay of Jawor, Waibel, Brandon Calderone, and Tyler McGeehan placed 5th, and the Free Relay Team of Jawor, McGeehan, Robert Lambert, and Waibel placed 6th.
