Gas Prices Rise as Memorial Day Weekend Nears

NEW JERSEY — After a few weeks of declining prices at the pump, the average price for a gallon of regular gas ticked upward nationally and in New Jersey.

AAA’s May 23rd survey of fuel prices found the current average price for a gallon of gas in New Jersey to be $2.39, three cents higher than a week ago ($2.36), but six cents less than one month ago ($2.45). The state average is 26 cents higher than this same time last year. Nationally, a gallon of regular gas costs an average of $2.36, two cents more than a week ago ($2.34), but six cents less than one month ago ($2.42). The national average is eight cents higher than one year ago ($2.28).

The average price for a gallon of gas didn’t move the needle much around the region. Connecticut drivers pay an average of $2.51 (up from $2.50 a week ago) and Pennsylvania drivers are paying $2.58 (up from $2.57 a week ago). New York drivers are paying an average of $2.50, the same as a week ago.
