SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Scotch Plain Public Library invites the public two events marking April’s Armenian Genocide Commemoration Day and The Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust (DRVH). Offered as part of the library’s Voices from the Margins series, the programs are:

  • A Journey to Life: Armenia. April 22 through May 5. Opening reception on Saturday, April 22 from 2:00 – 4:00pm.

Presented by Voices partner, Chhange (Center for Holocaust, Human Rights and Genocide Education), this exhibition portrays the full life experiences of Armenians before, during, and after the 1915 genocide. It depicts their vibrant life, culture, and loving family pre-genocide; the experience of dehumanization, the ethical challenges, and the genocidal brutality they survived; their remarkable return to life as refugees in NJ; and the effect of genocide denial. No registration is required.

  • Survival, Remembrance, Rebuilding: A Panel Discussion, Saturday, April 30 at 1:00 pm

In keeping with Voices’ emphasis on stories that make up the American narrative, three women will share personal stories of starting anew in the United States.  Panelists are Claire Boren, a Holocaust survivor, Eugenie Mukeshimana, a Rwandan genocide survivor, and Lucille Megerdichian Bills, a child of survivors of the Armenian massacre. This discussion is presented by Chhange.  ASL interpretation will be provided. Light refreshments follow the program.
