Girls Basketball: Westfield Defeats Scotch Plains-Fanwood in State Tournament Quarterfinals

WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School girls varsity basketball team defeated cross-town rivals Scotch Plains-Fanwood Thursday night, 45-34, in the NJSIAA Section 2, Group 4 tournament quarterfinals.

Sam Stravach led the Lady Blue Devils with 14 points, followed by Molly Ryan with 13. Abbe-Gayle Burton and Corinne Lyght led SPF with eight points apiece.

“I thought Scotch Plains played us very tough,” head Lady Blue Devils coach Liz McKeon said. “They played a great game and I just think our girls rose to the occasion and just wouldn’t settle and wanted to get the win.”

 “We played really hard and Westfield’s a really good team,” SPF coach Ryan McKenna said. “We took them down into the fourth quarter. They were really good they deserve to win.”

Westfield will play next in the semifinals on Saturday at noon, with their opponent to be announced.
