CRANFORD, NJ -- Scotch Plains-Fanwood took the title at the Union County Gymnastics Tournament held on Friday, Oct. 18, 2019, at Cranford High School.

While the Raiders have been having a fantastic season so far with a record of 10-1, it was a less than a perfect tournament for them. The team struggled at times to stick skills that they have been working hard on all season long.

“This is a very young team; many girls are freshmen and sophomores. For some this was their first County Tournament,"  said head coach Lisa Cerchio. "They were very nervous but did their best to recover after their small infractions.”

Throughout the meet, the team persevered with each event under the leadership of Senior captains Emily Grill, Nicole DeFrancesco, and Kelly Zimmerman.

  • On vault, Elisa Bianco placed second and Natalia Nervi placed fifth.
  • On bars, Tamyra Singletary placed third, Kelly Zimmerman placed fourth, and Elisa Bianco placed fifth.
  • On beam, freshman Jordana Reisberg performed her best beam routine of the season which clinched her the title of Beam Champion.
  • On floor, freshman Shaylin Farley threw a double back tumbling pass for her first time this season and finished with her double full earning her the title of Floor Champion.
  • In the all-around competition, Shay Farley took third place and Tamyra Singletary placed sixth.

The Lady Raiders ended up scoring a team total of 106.3 and earned the title of Union County Champions.

According to Cerchio, “It came down to tenths in determining who would be the team champions. Both Summit and Westfield performed strong and were in the running. At the end of the meet I was not sure how it would all add up.  I was amazed to find out that we pulled it off.”

This is the first Union County Championship for head coach Lisa Cerchio, who is coaching her 16th season this year.

“I have coined this year my 'Sweet Sixteen’ because these girls have really made this season amazing!  They are a cohesive unit with a lot of depth," she said.

"We are the largest team in Union County with 28 gymnasts.  It’s a big year of growth our program with the addition of an assistant coach, Tara Bozetarnik. We are looking forward to hosting the UCT next year."

The Raiders will continue their season at the North II Sectional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas High School (formerly Bishop Ahr). is Scotch Plains-Fanwood’s only free daily local news source.
