SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Scotch Plains-Fanwood (7-1) and ranked 8th in the state by NJ.com, has been named the top seed in the upcoming Union County Tournament. The co-defending champions Westfield and Cranford were seeded No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
In this abbreviated soccer season, the tournament's first round games are scheduled to be played on Saturday, Oct. 31, and the second round of games will take place on or before Wednesday, Nov. 4.
Scotch Plains-Fanwood draws a bye in the first two rounds and will take on Union in the quarterfinal round on Friday, Nov. 6. If they advance, the Raiders will take on either Summit or Gov. Livingston in the semifinals scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7. Cranford and Westfield are on the other side of the bracket and could meet in a semifinal. After being upset by Summit, 1-0, on the road last Thursday, the Raiders got back to their winning ways by shutting out Watchung Hills, 3-0, at Wexler Field.
Alexa Fazio, Corinne Lyght, and Lily Camacho put the ball in the net for, while Rebecca Kessler shut out the opponents as the Raiders improved to 7-1 on the season. Lyght had another strong game and was a disruptive force, cutting across the middle of the field almost at will and often finding her Raider teammates with crisp passes. She also put the ball in the net to give her team a 2-0 lead about midway through the second half of the game.
