Girls Soccer: Union Catholic Pulls Off Stunning Upset Victory Over Summit in the UCT

SUMMIT, NJ -- The Union Catholic girls soccer team, thanks to a clutch goal from Olivia Yarem and a game-saving stop from goalie Izzy DiDario, pulled off a stunning upset victory over Summit in the second round of the Union County Tournament on Saturday in Summit.

The Vikings, the No. 11 seed, trailed No. 6 seed Summit 1-0 in the second half when Yarem scored off a free kick from 20 yards out to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless overtime, Yarem, Sofia Alves, and Emily Duggan scored during the penalty kick session to give UC a 3-2 advantage in the shootout.

Then, with the outcome of the game hanging in the balance, DiDario made a sensational save on Summit’s final chance at tying the shootout to clinch the biggest victory of the season for UC.

DiDario’s game-ending save in the shootout put an exclamation point on a spectacular game by the senior keeper, who made 20 saves in the game.
