SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Comprised of a nucleus of freshmen and sophomore swimmers and leadership by senior Caroline Warren, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood girls varsity team took the Union County title over a stacked Westfield team last year. Warren now swims at MIT while most of the defending champions returned and led the Raiders to a fairly easy 102-68 victory over Governor Livingston in their season opener at Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

The 200 Medley Relay team of Lily Hughes-Julia Bonhote-Ava Mustacciuolo-Rachel Small beat Gov. Livingston's second place team by almost four seconds and never looked back. The Raiders took the next three races with Abby Ryan, Aislinn Mooney, and Julia Bonhote touching first in the 200 Free, 200 IM, and 50 Free to give their team what proved to be an insurmountable lead.

Coach Jess Hulnik called it a good overall performance from her swimmers.

"The girls were solid all the way around," said Coach Hulnik. "Gov. Livingston is a good team, and they were missing kids some kids today, but we did what we had to do."

Rachel Heeren was the star for Gov. Livingston. Heeren won the 100 Back and the 100 Fly and anchored the victorious 400 Free Relay for the Highlanders.

"It's always good to be back," added the coach, who has led the Raiders for 25 years. "The first one is nerve-wracking. I'm glad it's in the books."

The Raiders return to the pool on Thursday, Dec. 5, against New Providence.
