The Second Amendment brings a bang to the February meeting of the Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood. On Tuesday evening Feb. 27, we have small arms historian Glenn Papp who will trace the design evolution. Starting with flintlocks (circa 1700s), progressing to cap locks to bolt actions to semi-automatics in the 1960s, Papp will explain the technology and the mindsets that caused certain developments. These ideas changed the design of small arms.

Papp will explain why certain developments occurred. He will also describe when and where different countries took different approaches and will bring multiple examples of the various firearms to illustrate these timeline developments. Papp will also describe when and where different countries took different approaches. He will bring multiple examples of the various firearms to illustrate these timeline developments.

Papp’s strong interest in history emerged as a young teenager. His father took him to re-enactments which kindled his interest. As a result, he eventually joined a re-enactment group at age 17 where he developed a strong interest in firearms. This led him to start collecting them obsessively. His interest in firearms led him in 2016 to competitive shooting as a 3-gun shooter. He is now classified as “Semi-Pro” and is ranked #12 in the country for his division (Factory). He has also taught shotgun as an instructor for the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife Hunters Education Program. He really enjoys teaching and is a natural at it. His wife is a glowing example; she is now the West Virginian State Woman Shooting Champion.

Besides his strong interests in history, firearms and teaching, Glenn is Vice President in charge of operations and a member of the executive team of Papp Iron Works, a family business for three generations. He has worked in all the firm’s departments so knows the steel construction business well. Additionally, he has managed to achieve a Construction Engineering & Technology Associates Degree in his short 29 years. He also owns his own business, PewPewPlates which manufactures steel plate targets.

This meeting is FREE and open to everyone. Please bring friends and family to learn about the evolution of small arms design from Glenn Papp. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, and is being held at the Shady Rest at Scotch Hills Country Club at 820 Jerusalem Road (and corner of Plainfield Avenue) in Scotch Plains. Refreshments and fellowship follow the meeting.

Capitalist or Communist?

Karl Marx may have been the pioneer, but many other Jews were also involved in the struggle for communism, particularly in the early days of the Russian revolution. Personally, I don’t think that we have any apologies to make for this phenomenon. Having suffered unbearably under successive oppressive regimes, many of those political activists genuinely thought communism would be better ...
