Dear Editor:

I would like to wish our residents a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, and a Happy Kwanzaa. To amazingly large crowds, our Christmas Tree was lit on December 8th and the first lamps of the Menorah were lit on December 22nd. The manger with the animals in downtown Scotch Plains is now on display.

In these holy times filled with joy and reflection, I would ask that each of us look in our hearts and take some action to help the needy, ease someone’s pain or just be polite.  We are a town blessed with much abundance, but there is always something that can be done to help our fellow citizens.

So as 2019 comes to an end, I would like to thank those who have assisted me in my duties as Mayor starting with our Town Manager Al Mirabella who leads the town team and his administrative staff, Deputy Manager Margaret Heisey, Project Manager for Redevelopment Tom Strowe, and Administrative Assistant Claudette Desiato. These are the folks who directly support me and the other Township Council members.

Continuing on with the manager’s team:

  • The Clerk’s Office led by Bonnie Lacina;
  • The Building Department led by Bob LaCosta;
  • The Recreation Department led by D.J. Salvante;
  • The Finance Department led by Teddy Georgiou, including the Tax Collector Colleen Huehn and the Tax Assessor Michael Ross;
  • Judge Kelly Waters, Court Administrator Martha Marino;
  • The Public Properties Department led by Director Frank DiNizo;
  • Our first responders: Police led by Chief Ted Conley, Fire led by Chief John Lestarchick, and Rescue Squad led by Chief Carolyn Sorge, and the Office of Emergency Management led by Dennis Van Natta;
  • All our volunteers who serve on the Downtown Redevelopment Committee, Planning and Zoning Boards, the Recreation Commission, Environmental Commission, and the various other town committees. Also, a shout out to the library team led by Michelle Willis.

Finally, I would like to thank my Township Council colleagues Deputy Mayor Josh Losardo, Councilman Ted Spera, Councilwoman Elizabeth Stamler, and Councilman Roc White for their dedicated service to our residents this past year.

Enjoy the holiday season and looking forward to 2020.

Al Smith
