PLAINFIELD, NJ - The 7th grade class from Holy Trinity Interparochial School in Westfield visited the Plainfield YMCA Housing Division to learn first-hand how the shelter operates, and to see the facilities that are used to house an average of 25 families and individuals each night.

Theresa McCoy, the YMCA’s Housing Director, explained how the shelter provides assistance to Union County residents by providing a safe environment for them to stay during their time of need.

Annually, the shelter provides services to over 600 individuals for varying lengths of stay. During their time there, residents are often referred to other agencies for counseling and public assistance.

Community groups and individuals often volunteer to prepare and serve hot meals to the residents throughout the year.

The visit was a part of Holy Trinity’s 'Catholic Schools Week' featuring activities that focus on service. Additionally, the students will be preparing and providing 110 individual toiletry packages for the shelter residents. Each package will include basic items, such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and a washcloth.

While touring the facility, the students also had an opportunity to meet the Plainfield YMCA President & CEO, Mr. Ravenell Williams, and other members of the YMCA staff.

What Are The Warning Signs of Suicide

The recent passings of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain remind us to take mental illness seriously.

Many of us feel uncomfortable to ask when someone in distress is suicidal for fear we are putting this thought in their minds. This is not true. It is a myth that asking about suicide increases the risk of suicide. The most common mental illness is depression. Some people are ...
