SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Jade Isle Restaurant expects to open this week, according to the iconic Scotch Plains eatery's phone answering machine.
The new message at the restaurant Sunday said, "We are currently closed for reservations and expect to be open on or about Sept. 15th. We look forward to seeing and serving you soon."
Established in 1971, the Jade Island
has been known in the area for its Chinese and Polynesian fare, dim sum brunch, lunch, dinner and cocktails. The restaurant dates back to an era before the proliferation of Chinese take-out places that exists locally today. When it opened, it competed directly with the East Winds Restaurant on Route 22 (where Grillestone Restaurant now stands). At the time, they were the only establishments in the area to serve Chinese/Polynesian cuisine.
The eatery had posted a sign saying, "Restaurant Closed," last week but had not indicated the reason the sign was posted or when it might return to operation. TAPintoSPF made several calls to the restaurant to inquire about its future, but no messages were returned. However, the phone message today on (908) 322-6111 changed with updated information about its reopening timetable.
Fans of the longtime restaurant and its dim sum offerings and other Chinese/Polynesian fare expressed their fondness for Jade Isle and its owner and had hoped for updates on its reopening. TAPintoSPF will report more details on the date and time when the Jade Isle's reopening once they are available.
