SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- The Job Search Work Team, a non-sectarian help group that meets every Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. at Willow Grove Presbyterian Church in Scotch Plains, has expanded its services to include evening meetings with Tony Calabrese as facilitator.

The group, which is free and open to the public, now includes quarterly evening meetings to help people in the job market network and to help those who are in daytime schooling or job training. To date, the Job Search Work Team has benefitted more than 400 individuals since its inception in 2009.

The Job Search Work Team was developed by David Hale several years ago to aid in the career transitions process. Building on Mr. Hale’s format, Tony Calabrese has facilitated the group since January 2013. Mr. Calabrese is a Five O’Clock Club Certified Career Coach. He observes that many people in transition attend several help groups in the area and believes that the Job Search Work Team at Willow Grove Church is unique in its ability to coach and encourage people as individuals.

“Our small group uses individual discussion to practice interviewing, review members’ resumes, and get personalized feedback. We get to know each other. We listen,” Mr. Calabrese said. "Many times, group members return even after they land a job, so they can continue to help others network and find job opportunities. The Job Search Work Team at Willow Grove Church is a perfect complement to larger groups since it encourages more personalized conversation."

Tony Calabrese is trained to walk members through a five-step process of transition, spanning from assessing one’s employment needs to following up and feedback from the employer. The people he has coached are unemployed, underemployed, or fully employed individuials who either want to stay networked and connected or who have landed a job and want to help others in the same boat as they were.

Mr. Calabrese has made coaching a second career after many years in the corporate community.

“It comes down to fit. In this group, you learn how to present yourself," said Calabrese, who is president of Absolute Transitions LLC, a career development and coaching services company. "You learn to be specific, so you know if you’re the right fit for a job. The group helps you think outside the box.”

For information about the Job Search Work Team quarterly evening meetings, call the Willow Grove Church office at 908-232-5678 or email tony@absolutetransitions.com. Willow Grove Church (1961 Raritan Rd, Scotch Plains) is handicapped accessible with ample on-site parking.

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.

Politics IS Government in Union County

April 21, 2018

Dear Editor:

After Bruce Patterson of Garwood was stopped from speaking at the Union County Freeholder meeting of March 22 regarding the politics behind refusing to give the party line to a sitting Freeholder, I thought this brazen suppression of free speech could not go unanswered.

At the April 19 meeting I answered with these comments.
