SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Jerika Lufrano, a junior at Union Catholic, has emerged as one of the state’s best this fall. For her performance this week and overall this season, she is this week's Joint Motion Physical Therapy Athlete of the Week.

Lufrano finished first to lead her team to a dramatic victory at the NJ Catholic Track Conference Cross-Country Championships at Greystone in Morris Plains on Saturday. She covered the 3.1-mile course in 18:24 to spark the Vikings to a thrilling tiebreaker victory over Villa Walsh.

On Oct. 18, Lufrano ran 18:33 at Warinanco to win the Mountain Division title at the Union County Conference Championships. A week later, she ran placed second at the Union County Championships to move into a tie for the second fastest time in the long history of Warinanco Park at 18:30. She also won the UC Spooktacular Run on October 28.

“I feel very proud of what I’ve been able to do and what the team has done,’’ said Lufrano. “To run the second fastest time ever at Warinanco is amazing. Years later people are going to look back and see what I did, and it’s going to be very nice to be remembered.’’

Lufrano is one of the top contenders to win the NJSIAA Non-Public A Championship at Holmdel Park on Saturday, Nov. 11.
