SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- After suffering an injury in a recent game against Cranford, Scotch Plains-Fanwood senior Dean Kirian’s status of playing in Saturday’s Union County Tournament (UCT) quarterfinal against Oratory Prep was uncertain.
“It was questionable about him playing — I didn’t think he was,” said Raiders head coach Tom Breznitsky. “But he wants it so much. He came to me and said, ‘I went to the doctor, and the doctor thinks I can play’.”
Kirian willed himself to get back on the pitch, and the Raiders were glad he did. Kirian scored the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute, breaking a 2-2 deadlock and giving the No. 4-seeded Raiders a 3-2 triumph over pesky No. 12 Oratory Prep in the UCT quarterfinal at Wexler Field.
Prior to Saturday's game, Kirian had scored only one goal this season. It came on Sept. 7 against Steinert in a game that the Raiders also won by a 3-2 score.
“I can’t say enough about Dean Kirian,” Coach Brez told TAPintoSPF on Satuday. “He just goes out and gives 100 percent 1000 percent of the time. He gives it every second. He really wants it. I’ve been tremendously pleased with him.”
Following Saturday's big game vs. Oratory, Kirian doubled his season output by scoring two goals in a 4-3 loss to Piscataway on Columbus Day (Monday, Oct. 14). On Tuesday, he scored the Raiders' only goal in a 2-1 loss against Elizabeth, the ream that Scotch Plains-Fanwood will meet in the County semifinals on Saturday evening.
