In late October, Legacy Care Club, a private membership-based social day facility, opened on Route US-22 East in North Plainfield, across the street from the Watchung Square Mall. The over 6,000 square-foot facility hosts up to 60 members per day and is now accepting applications. The club specializes in memory care and caters to adults with mild to moderate memory loss.
Founded by a Mother – Daughter team; Maxine Willoughby, a Geriatric Nurse with over 30 years experience, and her daughter Jodyann Blagrove, an attorney dedicated to improving health care. While the number of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia grow exponentially, only “14 percent of adult day service centers primarily serve individuals with Alzheimer’s or other dementias” per the 2019 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, published by the Alzheimer’s Association. They identified this huge gap and saw the need to create an innovative approach designed to enrich the quality of life for seniors suffering from the disease.
Their first client enrolled within two weeks of opening. Quite an accomplished woman: one of the first Female investment bankers on Wall Street; invited to speak before Congress; author of two books, one fiction and one a biography. Unfortunately, after several strokes, was diagnosed with Dementia. According to the 2019 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures study “Participation in activities that are meaningful and bring purpose to one’s life” can help improve the quality of life for those suffering from the disease.” Therefore, the first task at hand was to prepare a care plan and determine which activities would enable her to contribute versus simply participating. Owner, Maxine Willoughby, explained “Keeping our members involved in planning activities gives them a sense of purpose. Incorporating their skills and interests give them the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge.” Daily activities now include a review of the stock market and news stories which may affect the direction of the market.
Explaining to a parent that you are taking them to a day care is quite a daunting task. Hence, the name Legacy Care Club. Sole intent is that clients do not realize they are attending a day care. Club CEO, Jodyann Blagrove, stated “Eating breakfast and lunch as a family help clients associate our club with home. Our karaoke sessions remind them of a lounge or afterwork event.” Their goal is to create an experience of food and fun, thereby defeating the negative connotation of the term ‘adult day care.’
While focused on memory care, Legacy is open to all seniors who need mentally and physically stimulating activities in a safe and secure environment. Prior to enrolling in the Club, future members are assessed and attend a free day trial to ensure the club is a right fit for them. The club partners with local dentists, podiatrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, who offer onsite services, reducing the time caregivers spend taking their loved one to their doctor appointments. Additional concierge services, including on-site salon, and personal hygiene services. On the first Wednesday of each month they host a caregiver support group sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association.
