Make a Gift for Someone Special – Free Workshops at Scotch Plains Public Library

Searching for the perfect present for someone special this holiday season? Come to the library and make one! Over the next several weeks, Scotch Plains Public Library will offer opportunities to take a break and design a one-of-a-kind creation you can give or keep for yourself.

For teens in grades 6-12, we have expanded Teen Scene Tuesdays on November 19 and December 17 to include a chance for up to 10 participants to paint and decorate wooden boxes with beads and jewelry findings. Participants can complete their project in one session or two. Materials are provided.  Registration is limited and pre-registration is recommended. As always with Teen Scene, those who will devote their time to Wii and Nok-Hockey do not need to register in advance. Snacks will be provided for crafters and gamers. Teen Scene runs from 3:30 to 4:30 pm.

On Monday December 2 at 7 pm, the library’s own Lisa Thornton will lead a hands-on workshop on using essential oils to create bath salts and sugar scrubs. Lisa, a certified clinical aroma therapist, is supplying jars and all materials along with instruction on how to make more at home.  Participants will be able to make one jar of bath salts and one of body scrub, choosing between citrus, mint and lavender oils.  She is also providing snacks made with the oils, and recipes. She says, “Using essential oils is an easy and enjoyable way to create healthy gifts the recipient  will enjoy using.”   This program is open to adults and teens in grades 7 -12 and also to older children in grades 5 and 6, who must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is limited and pre-registration is required.

Participants for both programs can sign up at the Reference Desk, on the library's website (, or by contacting the library at (908) 322-5007 x 204 or

Scotch Plains Public Library programs are free and open to the public. The Scotch Plains Library is located at 1927 Bartle Avenue, one block from Park Avenue in the center of town.

The Missing Moses

A seemingly dubious distinction belongs to this week’s Parshah, Tetzaveh (Exodus 27:20–30:10). It is the only reading in the Torah — from the first Parshah of the book of Exodus (in which he is born) until the end of the book of Numbers — where the name of Moses is not mentioned. Tetzaveh’s opening words are V’atah ...

The Definition of Insanity

February 21, 2018

Dear Editor:

There is a quote, attributed to various people, including Albert Einstein that states, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”, that is fitting for our current election for Union County Democratic Committee (UCDC) chair.

There is no shortage of polling data related to the functioning of our Federal, ...

Valentine’s Day is a day filled with Hallmark cards, chocolate covered strawberries, red roses and special dining.  It’s a day to express our love and affection to those close to us.  Some of us have expectations that this day will be blissful, we may even receive that diamond ring that represents engagement or marriage.

Valentine’s Day can be a wonderful time if ...
