SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Mayor Al Smith has joined the many politicians nationwide encouraging holiday shoppers to support their local small businesses.
"We have great places to shop downtown, and I hope the residents of Scotch Plains will support the local retailers and restaurants," said Mayor Smith, who has put a high priority on downtown redevelopment since taking office this year.
Holiday shoppers are expected to spend 47 percent more than they did last year from Black Friday through Cyber Monday, according to a RetailMeNot survey. Americans plan to spend an average of $743 this year, compared to $505 for the same period in 2016.
Small Business Saturday was launched by American Express in 2010 to celebrate and to help shoppers discover small businesses. Anyone can participate in the Shop Small® movement and promote neighborhood small businesses.
