FANWOOD, NJ – The third annual Memorial Day Concert “A Tribute to Fallen Heroes” performed by the Westfield Community Band under the direction of Dr. Thomas Connors at the Fanwood Train Station brought a large turnout on Sunday, May 25.  The concert, held under beautiful spring skies, featured patriotic songs and selections of letters written by soldiers.

Anthony Parenti of American Legion Post 209 led the crowds in the Pledge of Allegiance before Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr and Scotch Plains Mayor Kevin Glover opened the program.  Other speakers included Joseph McCourt, First Lieutenant, U.S. Army (Viet Nam), Ernesto Hernandez, Sergeant, U.S. Air Force (Operation Desert Storm), and Joe Rodriques, Major, U.S. Marine Corps (Operation Iraqi Freedom).

Musical selections included The Star Spangled Banner, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, God Bless America, Stars and Stripes Forever, and a “Salute to the Armed” Forces during which members of the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Marines were acknowledged as their respective hymns were played.  Baritone Kerry Stubbs moved the crowd with a stirring rendition of What a Wonderful World.

The annual Scotch Plains-Fanwood Memorial Day Parade takes place on Monday, May 26 beginning at 10:45 a.m., following ceremonies at the Fanwood Library at 9:00 a.m. and the Scotch Plains Gazebo at 10:00 a.m.
