WESTFIELD, NJ — Mobile Meals of Westfield, a non-profit community service that provides meal delivery to those who are unable to shop and prepare their own meals due to age, illness or disability, hosted the Greater Westfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s monthly networking breakfast Tuesday.

Located at 170 Elm St. (in the First Baptist Church of Westfield), for almost 50 years the volunteer-based organization has served more than one million meals to people in Westfield, Cranford, Garwood, Mountainside, Fanwood, Scotch Plains and Clark.

“We are unlike Meals on Wheels in that we are completely independent. Anyone can sign up,” Board President Nancy Otchy explained to the more than 40 business people attending Tuesday’s event. “Our clients pay a nominal fee.”

Clients can choose to use the service temporarily or on a permanent basis. For many, it is the only human contact they may get during the day.

“It’s that extra check-in, that little bit of personal touch … they love it,” board member Kate Wertheimer said. “They’re so glad when you come.”

Mobile Meals board members noted that, on more than one occasion, clients who had fallen and needed medical attention might not have received help for days if they had not visited.

Volunteers to pack meals at Mobile Meals can be as young as 8th grade, and children of all ages are welcome to accompany their parents on deliveries. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts often make cards to send with the meals, which clients also enjoy, board members noted.  For more information, email

The GWACC’s next networking event will be a happy hour at Keller Williams Realty in Downtown Westfield, Feb. 23. For more information and to register, click here.

Also this month, the chamber will hold a free health and wellness expo, sponsored by Trinitas Medical Center, on Sunday, Feb. 26, at Snuffy’s Pantagis Renaissance in Scotch Plains. For details, click here.

Staying On Top

Some people are bulldozers. They move mountains, conquer countries, achieve the seemingly impossible. But then when there are no more mountains to climb, they falter. Routines, maintenance and sustainability are not their strong points. They respond to excitement and challenge, not to the uneventful, monotonous daily grind.
