WESTFIELD, NJ — Geraldine Sanford, age 80, was the victim in Tuesday morning’s fatal fire at a condo in the Wychwood Gardens co-op community on Sandra Circle, according to the Westfield Police Department.

“As the adjacent apartments were being evacuated and firefighting efforts were underway, the resident Geraldine Sanford age 80 was discovered unconscious inside the apartment,” Westfield Police Chief David Wayman said in a press release. “She was subsequently removed from the apartment and unfortunately all attempts to resuscitate Miss Sanford failed.”

Wayman said that one police officer was treated on scene and transported to Summit Hospital for smoke inhalation. He was later released, Wayman told TAP into Westfield.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Union County Fire Investigation Unit and the Westfield Police Department, he said. According to Fire Chief David Kelly, they could not rule out improperly discarded smoking materials.

Sanford apparently lived alone, according the Westfield Fire Department.

Three nearby condos were made uninhabitable by smoke damage, Kelly said. The American Red Cross said that its volunteers were helping four people in two families with needs such as temporary lodging, food and clothing.
